CREATOR SPOTLIGHT: TRANSCEND SCALP BALM

THARA SACRA - TRANSCEND SCALP BALM

Years ago when I started having problems with my scalp google sent me down a rabbit hole that had me trying all sorts of oils to soothe my scalp and help nourish my mane. Castor oil was one of the first oils I used but it never made it into my final scalp balm formula. Castor oil is a folk remedy that has been praised for its ability to help grow hair. I call it a folk remedy because while you can find it on lots of blogs and many tutorials on how great it is it’s actually never been clinically studied for it’s hair growth properties. That being said, it is rich in ricinolecic acid, a fatty acid that has Anti-Inflammatory properties which can soothe some inflammatory conditions that lead to hair loss so it might be supportive in that way. I love it for lots of other applications it just turned out not to be what I would personally use in a hair product.

Why didn’t I use it? It’s thick and sticky. I mean SUPER thick and sticky. When used in formulas you always need to mix it with a thinner oil to balance it out. With my thick Indian hair it was just too much. Another concern? It’s recommended you watch what clothing you are wearing when you use it because it might stain fabrics. I wanted an oil treatment I would be able to use before bed and wear overnight not something I had to be super careful with.

I switched to coconut oil and that was okay for awhile. I liked how I could melt it in my hands before application but it was always difficult for me to shampoo out. Coconut oil can cling to the hair shaft and get deep into the hair cuticle. When you have really porous hair that can actually be beneficial but if your hair is low porosity that can be not so great. For me, it just wasn’t working. So I moved on to lighter oils like Jojoba and Argan which were amazing for my scalp and hair due to being rich sources of vitamin E as well as antioxidants.

While I loved using those two oils I missed the way coconut oil could be scooped up and controlled a bit more then the thinner oils. I liked that it didn’t drip everywhere and I could use it like a scalp massage balm. So while momentarily satisfied I still hadn’t found my dream scalp remedy.

When I started taking courses for skin and hair formulation I was introduced to a whole new pallet of oils. It was so much fun and eye opening. There were so many different oils to choose from. We learned about each of their properties and played around with each experiencing how they felt and moved on the skin. Eventually after a lot of trial and error I landed on a formula that has become one of my most beloved products, Transcend Scalp Massage Balm.
