TS-PRO: PSYCHODERMATOLOGY AND THE MIND-SKIN CONNECTION

I was researching beauty and spa trends for 2023 when I fell upon a Well + Good article by Zoe Weiner discussing ‘Psychodermatology’ and almost fell out of my chair.

According to Psychology Today, “Psychodermatology is simply the study of the relationship between the mind and skin.” They go further to explain that “Dermatologists with this specialty look at how skin disorders can affect mental health and how mental health affects our skin.”

What. You mean the foundation for why I created my products and brand is an actual scientific field of study? I wanted to scream at the top of my lungs and say I knew it, but it feels so logical based on everything I’ve learned and experienced myself.

I was oscillating between being super annoyed and completely ecstatic. Of course, I’m ahead of the curve in my quiet little small business corner while the beauty giants jump on the track to dominate the field. But also, this is freaking amazing, because it’s real.

Traveling back in time eight years ago when I was stressed out dealing with chronic inflammation, pain, psoriasis, hair loss and the ensuing emotional stress that triggered another cycle.  I didn’t know the reasons why I needed to incorporate my mental wellness with my skin wellness I just knew I needed to do it.

I set out to create an easier to use hair and scalp treatment that would help soothe the inflammation on my scalp while also helping to soothe my mind.

While researching ingredients I began to see natural synergies between their mind and skin supporting benefits. Rosemary oil for example, has been studied for its properties that help support hair growth and is also known in aromatherapy to help reduce stress and clear the mind.

I also wanted a way to combine my skin soothing rituals with my stress relieving rituals. Creating a less messy balm (as opposed to a drippy oil) made the experience less stressful and the aromatics helped make it into a meditative self-care ritual.

Fast forward those eight years to now and my vision has grown into a line that is supporting other small businesses incorporate metal wellness and skin wellness into their offerings. Super cool.
