GUEST BLOG: GROUNDING DOESN’T JUST MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER, ITS A SAFETY PERCAUTION
This week we are featuring a guest blog from the delightful SL Sourwine, author of A Little Book of Permission.
I always find it slightly amusing that we as humans believe we live outside the laws of nature and that it’s just something we observe, not something that we are part of and applies to us.
Like the way we believe that we can process and compost limitless amounts of things in our life without taking a break or being overwhelmed. Or the way we believe there is an endless amount of energy (personally and globally) and only the one kind that we use productively! And that we should always have access to it and if we are tired and unable to cope we must be doing something wrong or simply be something wrong.
We are actually creating energy all the time, but not the kind that lets you go to work, then the gym, cook dinner for twelve, look perfect and be the best mom ever all at the same time. That bit is limited by what your body can actually do that has nothing to do with what our world is currently expecting of you. Even just thinking about that creates friction energy! The kind of energy that our body doesn’t use to propel itself, but the friction of being on this planet in a body, having thoughts, and just bumping into the charged particles of everyone else.
“Grounding” in electrical work is a safety precaution that conducts excess electricity safely to the ground so it doesn’t cause injuries or fires.
Excess energy that doesn’t find its way to the earth is dangerous.
In a thunderstorm cloud all the different little particles of water, frozen water, droplets and hail particles bounce around and off each other in the different temperatures and that creates a charge (sound like anyone’s thoughts??). The difference between the charge in the cloud and in the ground eventually becomes too great and the electricity has to find its way to earth.
As humans we go around building up charge constantly and forget to create ways for it to move back to the generous absorption of the earth. To ground ourselves so the storm can dissipate.
When we live without grounding our energy there is no stable place to step into our lives from.
There is more likely:
Bursts of annoyance we wish we could take back.
Inaction while we struggle to contain the charge from our thoughts and fears.
Lack of focus while we dash from here to there to the most current eruption.
Feeling disconnected from our bodies while at the same time literally vibrating.
Anger at the difference between what we think we should do and what is possible right now.
Distance from our humanness and our connection to the planet and everything on it.
So when you are struggling to know what to do next, or how to deal with the overwhelm of just a day in the life of being human on this planet, remember to let yourself have some relief with a simple grounding exercise. A deep breathe. Bare feet on the earth. A gentle touch on your own skin or the nearest tree. A shake or stretch. It doesn’t have to be complicated to work. Lightening doesn’t mess about it just finds the quickest way down, so can you.
If you’d like to go deeper into what a grounding practise can bring into your life and try a couple of new things, my friend Tara Gangadharan, creator of Thara Sacra, and I have created an event just for you!
